Alibag! The Town in the Konkan region known for its pristine beauty. It is a historical place famous for ' n' number of things, ranging from its food to the beaches. Chaul, the port near Alibag was frequently visited by foreigners, rulers and traders. Alibag lies approximately 100 kms from Mumbai which gives an added advantage in becoming the favourite tourist spot.

There is a unique bond between Alibag and its visitors. From ancient time, foreigners visited India for different purposes. Travellers are mesmerised by the beauty of Konkan region.They visited Konkan either in search of a job /for education / for preaching or as adventure. Amongst the famous stories, one is of the Bene Israels who fled Israel and came to India approximately 2200 years ago. They settled in and around Alibag. They followed our traditions keeping faith in their own religion. Hence we can find a unique blend of culture here.

This region was also visited by merchants and traders. Long back, the Khatris, Pardeshis and many others who came from the North-west or nowadays Pakistan settled in this region. The temple of Hindulaja goddess located on the hilltop of Chaul proves the above. The Portuguese Christians who came to this region as traders or invaders used to act as preachers also. Their descendents are found in Konkan region.

Buddhist monks visited for the spread of their religion and trade. The Buddhist connection to this region is visible in the caves in Chaul and Kuda Mandad. Several foreigners from different countries and religions , viz, the Arabs, the Absenian, the Mughals, the  French, the British people travelled to this coastal region for different purposes . Some of them settled in this region while the others returned back to their native.

In recent times, the serene beauty of Alibag has attracted tourists from all over the country. Alibag is also known as ‘Mini Goa’. It became a popular weekend getaway due to its proximity to metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Pune. The panoramic view, historical monuments, ancient temples, exotic beaches , lush green hills and slopes, the delicacies from Konkan and its seafood makes Alibag a favourite place amongst travellers.

However, for some of them,  ‘Alibag’ means seafood and beaches. Many tourists are not aware of all the sites from Alibag which are worth visiting.

Three Tourist destinations

Alibag, Murud-Janjira and Shrivardhan in Raigad district have been accorded ‘B’ category status. The announcement was made by Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray on Monday, 15 February 21. This decision has been taken by the state government to give importance to the development of these tourist destinations in Raigad district, which is close to Mumbai and Pune.
