Cultural Heritage

Many Buddhist caves, Inscriptions and Tamrapatras (copperplate engravings) in and around Alibaug indicate the cultural heritage. Since long ago, the spread of education, scientific progress, and the increase in the means of communication have also increased cultural exchange. During the period of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre, many temples were constructed and renovated. After Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar accepted Buddhism in 1956, it also spread here. Bene Israel, followers of Judaism, may have come to India in the sixth century. Their places of worship and synagogues can be seen here. Muslims are also living in large numbers in the district. Raigad district has also got the legacy of many great social reformers and intellectuals. Many religious books written by these thinkers testify to this.

Literature and Art

Marathi literature has a very ancient heritage as some old inscriptions are found near Alibaug. A nine-line inscription at Akshi in Alibaug taluka dated to 934 AD. Year 1012 is considered to be the earliest inscription in Marathi. Like the inscriptions, the credit of the first copper plate goes to Raigad district. In the later period, Shri Dasbodh Scripture written by Samarth Ramdas in “Shivthar ghal” (ghal means cavern) of Raigad district. As the major places in Angrean Ashtagara were located in Alibag and its surroundings, many types of texts were written here even during Shivaji Maharaj’s time. During this period Marathi language dictionary, Marathi grammar and other textbooks were produced. Nagaon and Pen were centres of learning during the Maratha and Peshwa period. In the later pre-independence period, the literature and library resources here flourished with many school textbooks, reference books, theses, newspapers, etc.

Chaul was a famous port and prosperous city for international trade since before AD, so travellers from different countries used to come here for trade and other purposes. A large amount of international trade of goods was done through Chaul port. A Dutch traveller in 1583 described Chaul as a well-fortified port and a city famous for trade. Russian traveller Athanasius Nikitin visited Chaul Revdanda in 1470. Many such travellers have come here and have written down their travelogues here. Many bird watchers visit the Kankeshwar Hills near Alibaug, as well as the Akshi Beach, Phansad Sanctuary. The natural beauty here attracts tourists from nearby. It has a large number of forts, ancient monuments, ancient temples and other places of worship, thus tourism has developed in a big way.
