Tourism

Tourism as a commercial dimension –

Alibag’s nature & scenic beauty began to attract tourists. Due to its proximity to the big cities of Mumbai and Pune, the number of tourists here increased day by day. Alibag is now known as “Mini Goa ”. Tourists from Mumbai and Pune started visiting here even for a day trip, as a result of which the tourism business started growing here. Hotels, guest houses, resorts abounded here with many amenities near the sea shore. From which the locals started getting employment.

The beaches became more and more attractive. Adventure water sports began to appear on the shore, which allowed tourists to linger longer while enjoying the many sports while drowning along the waves. Businesses of local vendors, eateries, hotels, restaurants grew. The crowd that specially came to enjoy sea-food also began to grow. Due to the growing number of tourists, the “Tourism Business” in Alibag began to grow. Recently, tourism has become one of the main occupations of many locals.

Three tourist destination —

Alibaug, Murud-Janjira and Shrivardhan in Raigad district have been accorded ‘B’ category status. The announcement was made by Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray  on Monday, 15 February  21. This decision has been taken by the state government to give importance to the development of these tourist destinations in Raigad district, which is close to Mumbai and Pune.

Changing look of Alibag beach –

With the initiative of local administration and people’s representatives in Alibaug, a beautiful garden was planted around Hirakot lake which further enhanced the shallow beauty. Alibaug beach was also given an attractive look and a selfie point was set up here.

To strengthen the historical tourism here, with the concept of Dr. Vijay Suryavanshi Former District Collector of Raigad and the efforts of Alibaug Mayor Mr. Prashant Naik, a T-55 tank has been placed on the beach. Through this tank, India’s defense capabilities will be introduced to tourists from all over the world visiting Alibag. This historical heritage will definitely attract tourists to Alibaug.

Nearby Colaba Fort, beautiful beach, water games, T-55 tanks, selfie point are the attractions of Alibaug beach at present.

Transport

Mumbai Alibag Boat Facility –

From “Gateway of India” to “Mandwa” boat facilities were started by “PNP” and “Maldar ” companies and Alibag’s tourism business flourished. The number of tourists coming from Mumbai increased. Mumbai-Alibag distance reduced. This accelerated the growth and development of the city of Alibag.

Ro-Pax ferry service

Ro-Pax ferry service started from April 2021. The service made sea travel from Mumbai much easier. Transportation to Alibag was made easier, reducing traffic congestion on the highway and saving distance, time and fuel. Tourists coming to Alibag from Mumbai are currently giving special preference to this sea voyage. This will add value to the development of Alibag.

Expansion of Mumbai-Goa route –

The work of four-laning of Mumbai-Goa highway is currently underway. It will increase the number of tourists coming to Alibag from other cities. It will increase the trade and other industries in Alibag.

Industrialization

Industrialization and Development

Although tourism, fishing and agriculture are the main occupations of the local people of Alibag, some of the projects that have sprung up here have accelerated the pace of development here. The “Rashtriya Chemical and Fertilizer” factory set up at Thal-Vaishet adds value to the development phase here. Also, the “Vikram Ispat Project” setup at Vadkhal has largely created employment here and created a distinct identity for Alibag. A gas plant “GAIL” was also set up at Usar near Alibag, which has now relocated to Gujarat. The “JNPT” port also developed the villages here.

Academic​

Schools and Colleges –

Alibag has got Zilla Parishad as well as government approved schools and has given impetus to educational development here. J. S. M. College was established here in 1961 and the educational development here gained momentum. Also the transport system increased, ST Corporation buses started in many villages and the number of students coming to Alibag for higher education from the surrounding villages increased resulting in an increase in undergraduate and postgraduate students.

After the establishment of C. H. Keluskar Homoeopathic College and Hospital, it became easy for local students to get a degree in the medical field. Later, due to the establishment of “Datta Patil Law College”, the students here did not have to go to Pune or Mumbai to study law.

“Management College started by the P. N. P.  Education Society made it possible to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies in different fields. Also “St. Mary Convent High School” and “D. K. T. School “and ” R. C.F. Schools and junior colleges” were established and the number of students studying through English increased. The development in the field of education added to the actual development of Alibag.

Alibag is on the Mumbai expansion map of the Mumbai Metropolitan Area Development Authority (MMRDA). Plans to build a Virar-Alibag multimodal corridor have also been passed recently. Therefore, it is certain that Alibag city and Alibag taluka will develop rapidly in the future.
